got milk.

with one comment

It was an event in the auditorium in which it was people there telling us to drink milk because is  healthy for everybody. There was everyone. The principle was there, almost all the worker of manual arts, and a good portion of students as well. At the beginning  the Sub-principle started singing some songs that I didn’t know.In my opinion he sings very well, but  later there was  a celebrity that is very famous singe. The bad thing is that  she did not sing at all. It was boring. I do not think that  the way the company try to persuade students to drink milk is worthy.

Got Milk?

with one comment

Got milk? Well not me since I do not like it. Well this morning in the auditorium there was a presentation about milk. At the beginning they said drinking milk is healthy and that they were here at Manual Arts to tell us that milk is important in our life since it has vitamins and nutrients. Then Surprise! Mr. Lupejkis began to sing and let me tell you he sings very well. Then they presented the American Idol Winner whose is a good singer but she did not  sing a  lot.  I know it was not a concert but at least she could sing a complete song. Then people began to take some pictures of her. It was really a short time.

Interview: The Girl Called Jackeline

with 2 comments

The chaos encircling Jackeline is getting uncontrollable. People bombarding a single teacher with questions, others bombarding each other with questions. Girls giggling, boys jeering and Jackeline unaware of all that surrounds her.

Her head hangs low and she fans herself with her hand. Rolling her eyes at the heat that fills the small claustrophobic classroom that resides above the Manual Arts High School bookroom.

With a flushed face, she asks: “Shall we begin?”

Only if you’re ready. So tell me, what’s your name?

Jackelnine Lopez.

Tell me a little bit about yourself Jackeline.

I’m seventeen years old. [Hesitates] I’m a senior attending Manual Arts High School.

At this point I stop her from continuing sentence. Something about the way she said what school she attends bothered me a bit.

Do you like your school?

That’s neither here nor there. It’s a respectable place. Has it’s ups and downs like every other school in South Central.

I see you don’t mess around with the sugar coating and the use of the word South Los Angeles.

Not at all. Why should I? [Laughs] I think you should embrace where you come from. Even if where you come from isn’t the best place.

Do you dislike your neighborhood?

I dislike my neighbors let’s get that straight. Then again, no one has the perfect relationship with their neighbors. Some are loud and others like to keep to themselves. Mine just so happen to be under the loud category.

How do you feel about the people at school?

They’re just sort of…there. I mean outside of my group of friends, I don’t trouble my thoughts with other people.

Would you say that is due because of bad experiences with certain people.

Not at all. Like I said, they’re just there. They’re them and I’m me and you’re you; If that makes any sense at all.

A confused look crosses Jackeline’s face. As if she herself is trying to process what she just tried to explain to me.

Experiences in general. Do you have any memorable experiences from Manual?

Um…I’m going to have to think about that.

Looking away, with a pensive look upon her face, her eyes scan the room as if within it, she will find the answer to the question.

During this time, she asked me if she could take a small break. She engaged in a small conversation with a friend. They talked and laughed and mentioned all the bad times. Finally after approximately five minutes her nonchalant manner put upon my face a smile.

I’m ready.

Where did we leave off? Oh yes, you were about to tell me about a good experience you have had here at Manual…

Oh right. Well there was this one time when I was in I believe the ninth grade. I was in Mr. Zavala’s class. I played the Saxophone. It was around finals time and well I had been absent for his final. The day after his final, he saw me and asked me if I wanted to make up the exam that day. I was never that good at the Saxophone [laughs] so I obviously refused. Naturally, not wanting to see a student of his fail, we engaged in a tug-of-war where instead of a rope was my bookbag.

So you were having a tug-of- war with your teacher, how was that like?

Embarrassing. People were starting to gather and stare. I know he meant well and I thank him for that but if anything I was saving his ears from the ugly music that would come out of that saxophone.

I’m sorry, but I can’t see the positive experience from that incident.

Really? Well even though it was really really embarrassing, I learned something that day.

What was that? I asked, for she had stopped talking.

Well I realized that not all teachers are bad teachers. Among them are the good ones that go as far as to start a tug-of-war with you to get you to take a final.

So, tell me Jackeline; How did you do on your final?

I didn’t. [She smiles] I never took it.

INTERVIEW TO MICHAEL.

leave a comment »

Hello… my name is Yesenia… I’m going to interview Michael. She is in 11th  grade and she is part of SCGA and she is  going to tell us about an experience of her as a student of Manual Arts… so what is your experience Michael in this school?

well, my experience that I think that is the most important was my first fight, actually it wasn’t my fight but I get involved to it, just because one of my classmate on P.E. hate to all of my friends and me.

-I felt a little bit scared just because it was my first fight with a girl, but the only thing that I thought was

to defend my friend, but there was a problem…how???

-What I did was to keep calm, but the same day this girl try to intimidate me, thing that makes me felt angry. When the to “fight” came, I was just waiting for her to make the first hit but she brought some of her friends and all of them went against to my friend, so they fight and I just try to defend her and after all my friend won…!!!!

-What I think about Manual Arts is that the same security body likes to see fights between the same students that they “protect”. And the way that I feel now reminiscing, is not like a good way because I think that this fight was a little infantile, I mean, this fight had no reason to do it. We aren’t animals.

Interview

with one comment

Hello! My name is Katya Lopez. I interviewed to Karen Flores last wednesday. She is 20 years old and her favorite class is art.

I asked her about an accident that she lived in the school. She told me about a event that she remember. When she came to this school (Manual Arts High School) She went to the library to return a book. She didn’t know where she have to put it. She asked her where she can leave the book. then the librarian got mad and she start to shout to her. A boy who was in the library helped her and he talked to the librarian. Karen was very grateful with him. The boy said “She is always like that.” Karen said that she never went to the library until this year. This event was every difficult for her because she felt that this event made her shy. She was so lucky of met people who motivated her to continue forward.

two months ago I went to the clinic that is in my school to made my  fisical  for my  team cross country. but they did not made me my fisical because the doctor never was there and the days she was there i could not be there for my classes. so i passed two months weating for do my fisical . my coach was angry with me because i almost did not have my fisical on time. Also without fisical i coul not practice with my team o be part of the team so was so mad because for going everyday to see if the Doctor was in clinic  weasting time and classes. so i just asking to my self if it was an emergency i think i or something wrong with me maybe i could have a fracture and i also i do not even knew if i was capacity to run for the team and i was practice with know about it. I  think that is a irresponsibility from the Doctor to not notice that she will not be in the clinic the day she made the appointments. so i just writing about this because i think this is important to know and do something to change it.

Interview!

with one comment

Hello, my name is Karen. Yesterday I interviewed Yesenia and this is the story she told me,

When I first came, I was in the cafeteria and one African American girl stole my purse. I went to tell the security about that and he asked if I saw her stole it. Isaid yes and he went to talk to her. She admited she had my purse and gave it to me. I was scared since people say they can do many bad things to you. The security guard asked me if I wanted to go to tell the police, but Isaid no because I was scared she got angry with me. When I open my purse I noticed that the only thing she got from  it was my lunch ticket. It is weird since I had money in it. I suppose she was hungry that day. But I do not understand why didn’t she just asked me for the tickets? Well thanks God after that she never hurt me.

Well Yesenia had this experience whe n she was a freshman and that is why I think she was scared of telling the police about this incident. Yesenia also told me it was not her first time that somebody stole something from her. She had had many similar experiences before and after that one. I think Yesenia has to be more careful since it is kind of strange that these things happen to her.yesenia 2

Seniors do not give up!

with 6 comments

Hello, my name is Karen Flores. I am a senior at Manual Arts High School. This is my last year in this school and that is why I think we should make a change in our lives. Many of us do not care about the issues happening in this school since we know that our voice does not count when decisions are taken. But in my opinion this could change since  our education is our first priority.

Last month many of us had problems when we decided to express ourselves. Many people in administration began to see us like if we do not know in what we are getting into. But although they are still talking about us, we should not give up just becuase we are students. Seniors remember we had suffered many kind of discrimination in this past three years. Don’t you think it is enough?

We will be in the universtiy next year and our lives are going to change radically, but what about the students who are still in this community? We, as mature people have the responsibility of helping them in their way to university. we are almost out, but we should leave a change in our community. I t might be difficult but it is not impossible. The last week of August, some SCGA students began to create a new club that will fight when there is a problem that affect us. We want to contribute in the change MAHS is having right now.

We all know that uniforms and the new Principal are bringing changes for all of us, so we all should work together to achieve what we consider fair for everyone. It is our school and it is our community, so let’s try to improve our culture. Let’s try to show the world we belong to this society and that we can make a change . It doesn’t matter if we belong to a minority, if we we work together we are going to reach our goals.

Have a nice day… and remember, never give up!r172d4ab578c8f8e40

The Philadelphia Eagles Season

leave a comment »

I surely dont know what the season of the philadelphia eagles season will be. Its hard to tell because there are too many injuries and the key to winning football games is with no injuries. Starting with the o-Line, two are injured. How can the Eagles win when two of the most important guys in the offense are out. Many comments are spreading that the Eagles will go 0-16 (which will never happen). If they were to go 0-16 I will still go for them because whether they win or not I’m a Eagles Fan.

I could fairly say that their season will be 10-6 which is not that bad.Hope the best for the team because this upcoming Sunday, the Eagles are going to play the Carolina Panthers away. Now this is a true challenge for the team because most of the leaders in the team are injured or have left the team by free agency.

!! Eagles !! Superbowl this Year!! Bring the trophy to Philly!!
